UNDERSTANDING THE OPTIONS

What does “detox” mean at a wellness retreat?

The same word is used for very different services. Read the programme behind the label.

A term with several meanings

In wellness marketing, detox may describe a food plan, a structured stay or a collection of treatments. It is also used in clinical settings for managed withdrawal from substances. These are different services and should not be confused.

Look for a concrete description

Ask what you will eat, which activities and treatments are proposed, and who supervises the programme. An undefined promise to remove toxins is not enough information on which to make a health decision.

Ask about evidence and risks

The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports limited research and no compelling evidence supporting detox diets for eliminating toxins or managing weight. Restrictive practices and some products can also carry risks. Discuss relevant health conditions and medication with an appropriate clinician.

Choose by fit, not intensity

A severe or demanding programme is not inherently more useful. Ask how the provider checks suitability and responds if you feel unwell or cannot follow a proposed restriction. The plan should be explained before you commit.

Think beyond the stay

If the aim is a more manageable everyday routine, ask how the recommendations will work at home. Sustainable meals, a realistic schedule and appropriate professional input are more useful comparison points than dramatic short-term promises.
